Henry Parkes also made a Tenterfeild speech. This was in 1889, when the Australian population had reached 3 and a half million. In his speech, the two main points were transportation (because every colony had a different sized train track), and defense. Sir James Bevan Edwards claimed that Australia would be in great danger if ever attacked. So colonial parliaments were each sending two delegates to Melbourne to discuss federation. This was called Australasian Federation Conference. Henry Parkes said “What the Americans could do by war, Australia can bring about in peace”.
